Château Pédesclaux: A gem to discover

Jacques Leisy

Last week, we had the delightful experience of exploring Château Pédesclaux, a hidden gem nestled along the road between Saint-Estèphe and Pauillac. To truly appreciate the exquisite fusion of glass and Bordeaux stone, one must approach closely. The reception rooms are magnificent, and the view of the river is simply breathtaking. Our enchantment was so complete that we even forgot to capture the moment in photographs!

Château Pédesclaux’s cellar is a remarkable architectural achievement, crafted in collaboration with architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte. It employs a 100% gravity-based elevator system, similar to what we’ve observed at Cos d’Estournel and Lynch Bages, to preserve the grapes’ delicate aromas.

The juxtaposition of hyper-modern steel tanks with stone, wood, and glass creates a truly enchanting experience at Pédesclaux winery. It’s undoubtedly one of the most beautiful wineries we’ve had the pleasure of visiting.

Art permeates every corner of Château Pédesclaux, from the paintings adorning the château’s rooms to the statues gracing the park and cellar.

We were absolutely delighted by this discovery, which concluded with a leisurely lunch on the grass at Château Lilian Ladouys, accompanied by steaks from the Pigout butcher shop in Saint-Estèphe.

Château Pédesclaux, a grand cru classified in 1855, has now secured a coveted spot on the “Must See” list for Château Papounan’s guests.
